The garbage disposal is one of the most useful elements in the kitchen. It’s sanitary, it helps you keep the sink clean, and it eliminates the hassle of scraping plates over a trash bin before you wash the dishes.
But what do you do if your garbage disposal runs when the switch is off? What does it mean and how can you fix it?
What to Do When the Garbage Disposal Won’t Turn Off
Before getting into the nitty-gritty, let’s get the most important thing out of the way: NEVER reach into the garbage disposal with your hand.
How to Fix a Garbage Disposal That Won’t Turn Off in 5 Steps
Step 1. Keep the wall switch set to the “Off” position.
Step 2. Open the cabinet under the sink, and locate the power cord that goes from the disposal’s motor to the outlet on the wall.
Step 3. Once you find the cord, unplug it.
Step 4. Plug it back into the outlet that’s right next to the original one (or above, or below). If the garbage disposal doesn’t start to run, you’re on the right track.
Step 5. Flip the wall switch back on. It should be working properly now.
Please Note:
If when you plug the cord into the second outlet you immediately hear the garbage disposal start to run before turning the wall switch back on, then you have a wiring issue and you’ll need either an electrician or an HVAC technician to rewire the disposal.
