Quick Tips to Avoid Garbage Disposal Repair

garbage disposal

Garbage disposals and their uses are widely misunderstood. While today’s new garbage disposals can handle just about any food you throw at them, most older models can not. Consequently we always recommend that you first scrape food off plates, pots and pans into the trash or compost bin, then rinse the rest down the garbage disposal. Follow this simply method:

1. First turn on the cold water (not hot water) and the disposal;

2. Then scrape bulk of food off the plate into trash can;

3. Rinse balance of food into garbage disposal;

4. When done, turn off disposal but continue to run cold water for two minutes to assure that food has been completely rinsed out of disposal and flushed into the drain.

5. Remember that large quantities of food going into older disposers can overwhelm them and clog the kitchen sink drain, if that happens you can email Rosun® 24 hours a day, every day.

Here is a Typical Garbage Disposal Problem You Can Sometimes Fix Yourself

You turn the switch on and the garbage disposer just hums. Sometimes it hums then you hear a “click” and the unit goes quiet.

What happened?

Typically what happened is the blades in the unit were jammed, maybe with old, crusty food or maybe an object of some kind. When you turned the unit on, the humming you heard was the jammed unit trying to “spin” but it couldn’t. After a few seconds of being jammed, the unit would trigger a circuit breaker that is designed to “trip” to prevent the unit from overheating. (You might have heard a “snap or popping” sound just before the unit went silent).

The Solution

Press the reset button located on the bottom of the disposer, you may need a flashlight to find it, it is normally on the very bottom of the unit. If this doesn’t work, turn off the power switch and shine a flashlight into the drain. Look for a foreign object such as a coin, plastic bread tie, staple, etc. Remove the item with pliers or a grasping tool. It is dangerous to put your hand inside a disposer so be sure to the switch is off and exercise extreme caution.

Some models of disposer have a hex key jam clearing tool. Look for that tool under the sink or taped to the disposer. If you find the tool, check for a slot on the bottom of the disposer (normally right in the middle) where the tool can be inserted and turned back and forth to clear the jam.
