What You'll Need

A garbage disposal air switch is a more aesthetically pleasing switch which controls your garbage disposal unit. It has pneumatic technology (uses air pressure as the name implies) to control the unit, thus reducing risk and dangers of electrical shock. It can be installed quickly and easily plus you may choose where you want to install it, such as the sink itself, on your countertop, or on a wall mount. It can match your current kitchen sink design with either chrome, nickel, and white color options. These air switches will go well with any modernized kitchen. Here is the simple way to install your garbage disposal air switch.

Step 1 - Drill a Hole

Drill a 1¼ inch hole in the countertop. This is where you will be putting the air switch. Make sure that you find a spot that is easy for you to reach. Most people who convert to this type of switch are vertically challenged, since most disposal switches are installed way beyond some people’s reach.

Step 2 - Mount the Button

Use the rubber gasket above the counter for the air switch on the outside and tighten with a plastic nut from below your sink. If you will be mounting the air switch button on a sink top, you may use the hole for sprayer or soap dispenser.

Step 3 - Attach the Tube to the Button

Attach one end of air tube to the bottom of the air switch button and the other end to the white nib on the black converter box. Use your cutter to cut the air tube to the desired length. The converter box and air tube should be included in the garbage disposal air switch kit.

Step 4 - Check for Leaks

Inspect the quality of plumbing under the sink and make sure there are no leaks. If there are, seal them using putty. Since you will be placing an outlet under your sink, it is important that the area under the sink is kept dry at all times especially when the installation is being done.

Step 5 - Switch Off Power

Switch off power to the kitchen area to ensure safety. Do this by going to your home’s main power box and turning off power to the kitchen. Once you have turned it off, plug the converter box into the wall outlet. The outlet should be a three-prong grounded outlet. Plug the sink disposal cord into the converter box. Turn on the main power switch to the kitchen once again.

Step 6 - Use the Switch

Now you are ready to use your garbage disposal air switch. This switch is very simple to use. Press is to deploy the garbage disposal and press it once again to stop it. If the garbage disposal air switch fails to function, it is best to read owner’s manual to troubleshoot problems.
