With the holidays upon us, you might be making more use of your kitchen than before. From baking cookies for Santa to roasting your meat of choice, you kitchen sink and garbage disposal are getting a workout. When cleaning up, though, be careful of these 5 things you should never put down the garbage disposal.
1. Oil And Grease
Got a pan full of bacon fat? Not sure what to do with the oil you fried the turkey in? Whatever you do, don’t pour it down the drain! Not only will the oil coat your garbage disposal blades, making them dull and ineffective, but the grease will harden in your cold pipes. When this happens, you could end up with a smelly, stubborn clog and a major kitchen catastrophe.
2. Fruit Pits And Seeds
If you’ve even accidentally bit into a cherry or plum pit, you know it’s hard as a rock. Unfortunately, even your powerful garbage disposal can’t break through fruit pits. Throw pits and seeds from peaches, plums, cherries, avocados, and similar fruits into the trash. Even smaller citrus seeds and popcorn kernels can get hung up in your disposal, so scrape them into the trash as well.
3. Bones
After you’ve made a meal out of your roast turkey, glazed ham, or crown roast, throw the bones in the trash. It’s unlikely that your garbage disposal will be able to break them apart, and if it does, they will splinter and get clogged in your pipes.
4. Excessively Fibrous Foods
Chopping through excessively fibrous foods isn’t easy for your garbage disposal and can lead to increased wear. Avoid disposing of sweet potatoes, carrots, beets, and similar fibrous foods. Toss them in the trash or compost instead!
5. Non-Food Items
While it may seem harmless, your garbage disposal was not designed to shred non-food items. This includes plastic, aluminum, cat litter, paper, twist ties, and more. Even organic materials like dirt and plant clippings should go in the trash.
