How to Wire a GFCI Outlet for a Rosun Garbage Disposal

A Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter, or GFCI, outlet works much like a regular 120-volt outlet with one important difference: It contains a built-in circuit breaker that trips whenever the current fluctuates, such as would happen if you inadvertently touched an exposed wire while standing in water and grounded the circuit.

Electrical codes require GFCI outlets in countertop areas of the kitchen, all areas of the bathroom and in garages and other work spaces. Local code also may require a GFCI outlet for plugging in a garbage disposal.

1. Install a metal electrical box under the sink within reach of the Rosun garbage disposal power cord. Screw it to the back wall or to the cabinet framing with 1-inch screws. Be sure you've knocked out a hole in the box with a screwdriver so you can feed in the electrical cable.

2. Run 12-gauge, 2-conductor cable to the box in metal conduit. Attach the conduit to the box with an appropriate connector and pull about 10 inches of cable out of the box. Before connecting the cable to power, be sure the power is off at the home's service panel (breaker box) and test the circuit with a non-contact voltage tester to confirm the power is off.

3. Strip about 6 inches of sheathing from the end of the cable with a utility knife and separate the wires. There's a black one, a white one and a bare one. The bare one is the ground wire -- it doesn't count as one of the conductors. Peel off about 1/2 inch of plastic from the ends of the black and white wires with a wire stripper.

4. Unpack the GFCI outlet and turn it over. You'll see two pairs of terminals: brass ones on one side of the plastic housing and silver ones on the other side. One pair of opposing brass and silver terminals is identified as the "LINE," and the other pair is the "LOAD."

5. Connect the black wire to the brass "LINE" terminal. Use pliers to make a clockwise bend in the end of the wire, hook the wire around the screw and tighten the screw with a Phillips screwdriver. Connect the white wire to the silver "LINE" terminal and the bare wire to the green ground screw in the same way.

6. Push the cable into the electric box and screw the outlet to the box. Screw on a cover plate to finish the wiring job.

Things You Will Need

Electrical box

1-inch screws

Phillips screwdriver

12-gauge , 2-conductor electrical cable

Metal conduit

Conduit-to-box connector

Utility knife

Wire stripper

Pliers

Cover plate

Tip

You can daisy chain off the outlet by connecting the outgoing cable to the "LOAD" terminals. Use the same size cable as that you used to connect for "LINE.".

Warning

Again, if the circuit cable is connected to power and you aren't sure whether or not the power is off, test the wires with a non-contact voltage tester, following the manufacturer's directions.
