Taking organic wastes our of our refuse stream can help to control vermin population such as rats, mice, maggots and flies. Prior to the introduction of residential disposals into the marketplace in the mid-1930’s, homeowner’s/apartment dwellers’ trash typically contained large amount of organic material. Organic wastes in trash containers, not only will decay and putrefy releasing unwanted odors, but also provide the food source and breeding ground for insects and the other vermin mentioned above.

Another positive environmental impact of the residential disposer is the reduction of organic loading of the sanitary landfills. As organics decompose within the landfill, methane waste gas is generated which must be vented and disposed of, often through burning.
For a residential septic system, as long as the system is sized correctly, the organic material from the kitchen disposal provides beneficial organic media to support bacterial growth. A residential septic system relies on bacteria to “digest” waste material. Paper (such a toilet paper and Kleenex) imposes a load on the systems without providing for bacterial growth. Food wastes from the disposal enhances and supports the bacterial and enzymatic digestion of the human wastes.
At a presentation by our utilities director/manager in my town, one of the audience members asked her the impact of the residential disposal on the city’s waste treatment facility. She responded that the impact of our residents’ disposals was negligible to slightly positive. Positive in that it provided organic media that supported bacterial growth for digestion and enhanced the systems operation.
In essence the residential waster disposer has made a positive impact in reducing human disease transmission, reducing organic loading of our landfills and benefitting the functioning of the home septic system and our municipal waste treatment centers.
The garbage disposal is a valuable tool that aids in the prevention of the spread of disease, reduces our vermin and insect population and helps keep our environment and our landfills clean. It can only do its job if it is used properly.
